The best way to fight a fire depends on its type and the situation. Fire is categorized into classes, and different methods are effective for each type. Here are general guidelines:
1. Assess the Situation
Personal Safety First: Ensure your safety and the safety of others. Evacuate if the fire is out of control.
Alert Others: Call emergency services immediately, and activate fire alarms if available.
2. Identify the Type of Fire
Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, fabric)
Class B: Flammable liquids (oil, gasoline)
Class C: Electrical fires
Class D: Combustible metals (magnesium, titanium)
Class K: Cooking oils/fats (kitchen fires)
3. Choose the Right Method
For Class A (Ordinary Combustibles):
Use water to cool and extinguish.
Fire extinguishers (Class A-rated) are also effective.
For Class B (Flammable Liquids):
DO NOT use water as it can spread the fire.
Use a Class B fire extinguisher (foam, CO2, or dry chemical).
For Class C (Electrical Fires):
Turn off the power source if safe.
Use a CO2 or dry chemical extinguisher. Water can cause electrocution.
For Class D (Combustible Metals):
Specialized Class D extinguishers with dry powder are required.
DO NOT use water or ordinary fire extinguishers.

4. Fire Extinguisher Use (PASS Method)
Pull the pin.
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the handle.
Sweep from side to side.
5. Fire Blanket
In small, contained fires (like kitchen fires), a fire blanket can be used to smother the flames by cutting off oxygen.
6. Professional Help
For larger or uncontrollable fires, leave the area and let professional firefighters handle the situation.
